WORK SPACE WITNESS PLACE

My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and of Your salvation all day long. Psalm 71:15 (NASB)

God has given each of us a special arena to reach lost souls—a place where only we can minister.

My nursing profession provides unique opportunities to meet people at a point of need where medicine falls short. Often a patient arrives in my office stunned by a diagnosis that leaves them peering into the window of eternity. Their life suddenly careens into an abyss where all of the world's medical brilliance offers no guarantee.

Like blind men stumbling, groping in the dark, they are searching for something to give direction and stability. They need a light in the terrifying darkness of their diagnosis. Faced with their own mortality, suddenly what was of value yesterday, today is worth nothing.

Five minutes into conversation reveals if they have the peace and assurance of knowing Jesus. If they are secure in their eternal destination, they are concerned but not shaken to the core. Their feet are resting on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.

It's the other patients that grieve my heart and leave me praying for an opportunity to share my faith. Often, God has answered that prayer by having them look up and rest their eyes on the cross or a Bible verse on my office wall. Usually a question follows. I thank God for the opportunity and ask for His leading. My work space has become my witness place.

Whether facing a terminal diagnosis or another life issue, every person we meet needs to know the security of God's kingdom. We all have an important job to do.

Father, Help me to always keep my eyes open for opportunities to share Your gift of eternal life. Amen.

SPRINGS PREVIEW

See? The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth. Song of Solomon 2:11, 12a (NIV).

Silly little tulips, peeking from the ground.
Do they know something that I don't know?
Or do they stick their heads up just to look around
And see if there is yet a trace of snow?

Don't they know it's winter and spring is long away?
Old man Frost still has a trick or two.
But those silly little tulip heads look like they're here to stay.
I wonder, if it snows, what they will do?

Perhaps they all got lonesome, so long beneath the ground
And came up for a peek at God's blue sky.
Or, maybe they're a preview of springs lovely sound,
Silently pushing winters chill on by.

Father, I am blessed to witness the seasonal changes and the awakening of the earth as spring nears and the flowers are reborn. Thank You, Father, that our earthly home is renewed according to Your word. Amen.

THE BEST LAID PLANS

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

“When are you due?” people would ask as soon as they found out I was pregnant.

“April 1st,” I would reply, and add after a moment, “It’s okay, you can laugh.”

It would take a second, but then they would get the joke and chuckle. My husband thought it would be awesome if our son was born that day, but I was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a life-threatening condition, on March 27th. For three days, the doctors and nurses tried valiantly to get me to go into labor, but to no avail. (Most at this point express sympathy for my terrible plight, but I reassure them that it was not actually bad. I never went into labor.) The staff nicknamed me Fort Knox. My husband jokes that they were inventing drugs for the purpose. They even pulled out a drug which they had not used in five years but no luck.  Instead, on March 30th, I played turkey, and they carved my son out of me.

I am so grateful that God’s plans never go awry, even if our part in them never seems to be what we want. Things may get rough or be so great we are waiting for the other shoe to drop, but He never steps off His throne. It is truly amazing to be in the hands of such an awesome God!

Prayer: Lord, You are the only One who knows exactly what will happen, and You are the only One who can always control the ups and downs. Thank You for being the Only God.

FINISH THE RACE YOU STARTED

“How-ever, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me─the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24 (NIV)

As a ten year old, I entered a race requiring me to put a raw egg on a tablespoon. The task. Get to the finish line without the egg falling off the bowl of the spoon.

Standing at the starting line with several other children, the gun goes off and I head for the finish line. Holding the spoon as steady as possible, I was determined to make it first to the end. As I grew closer to the finish, I noticed that there were three others in front of me. I stopped, turned my spoon upside down and watched the egg bounced to the ground, cracked open, than seeped into the grass.

When I looked up, all three kids lost their eggs just before crossing the line. To my horror, the three kids behind me went on to claim the prizes. I was given a task and failed.

Paul considered his life worth nothing if he did not finish the race God had given him. His task was to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.

As we think about Easter, we see that Jesus finished the task that was given to Him. He finished the race by hanging on the cross, then was raised three days later. He could have ended the suffering at any point, but He chose to finish.

Lord, help me to see that You are always there. When I am given a task set by You, help me to finish the race and not drop the egg.

THE RESURRECTION LILY

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. John 11:25 (KJV)

Last spring, my daughter gave me seven Resurrection Lily bulbs. I planted them. Weeks later, long, dark leaves emerged. After a few weeks, they began to die, disappearing into the ground. During summer, long, sturdy stems came through the soil, sans leaves. Lovely lavender-pink blossoms emerged at the top of the stems.

Once the leaves died into the soil, the lily was resurrected and bloomed beautifully. This flowering habit coincides with Jesus' death and resurrection. He rose to adulthood (the leaves) and began His ministry preaching the Gospel of God's Kingdom. Three years later He was crucified and laid in a tomb (the leaves die back to the soil). After three days Jesus was resurrected (the emerging of the sturdy stem and blooming of the lily flowers). He remained for forty days, spreading the light of His love and truth to His disciples and those who would carry the Word after His ascension to Heaven.

The beautiful flowers last seven to eleven days before they drop off the stem. Jesus' Word lasts forever.

Beneath the soil the bulbs slowly multiply until there are many where one was planted. Jesus' Word multiplies from one believer to another until it spreads around the world. In Matthew 24:35 it states, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, who loved us enough to die for our sins. Thank You for His resurrection so that we may live with You forever. Amen.

ALWAYS THE SAME

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day and for ever.” James 13:8 (KJV)

After attending the funerals of two deputies who were killed by a senseless act of violence, the lives of the family of these brave men will never be the same. I will never be the same.

It was heart-warming to see the community rally around the families. Visiting the place of the shootings and the sheriff office, this became clear as the flowers, balloons and stuffed animals continue to accumulate by the door of the restaurant and the sheriff’s car.

The viewings were from morning to evening for two days. This allowed the community to come at their convenience to express their condolences. Officers came from far and wide to offer their services. To see so many policemen and firemen gathered in one place, overwhelmed my heart.

As we witness the changes to the families’ lives and the sheriff station, we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus’ love never changes. Jesus remains constant.

The two deputies are home with Jesus. Jesus is home with each of us. He lives in us and never changes. He is there to help us through the changes in our own lives.

Tomorrow brings new challenges. We do not know what the future holds. What we can take comfort in is that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and for all the tomorrows to come.

I will say my prayers for the deputies’ family and ask Jesus to give them comfort and strength to continue. Today, I take comfort in Jesus as well.

Lord, You are my constant, even when I am ever changing. Help me to be steadfast in Your love, grace and strength.

THE THIN BLUE LINE

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 (NASB)

Once again officers responding to a call in the line of duty have laid down their lives protecting others. Our hearts are broken. A community is mourning and families are hurting . . . aching, trying to comprehend the unbelievable void. Many questions are left unanswered.

We look to God and beg to make sense of it all. Human understanding only takes us so far. In these times we must stand on what we know to be true. God is good—all of the time and He absolutely, unreservedly, deeply loves us. He is weeping with us, but it does not end there.

Long ago, he knew this day would come, so He prepared a way for us to be one with Him and experience His comfort and peace. He wanted us to know complete assurance of His unfathomable love.

Thus, He did the unimaginable. He allowed His precious son, Jesus to be nailed to the cross for our redemption. He knows crushing grief. He was there as the thin blue line of Jesus' vein was pierced by nails driven through His flesh to the wood of the cross. The blue line poured forth red as His blood ran down to cover us and wash away all our sins.

Police officers stand as the thin blue line that protects society from evil and chaos while on this earth.

Jesus erased the line that separated us from God eternally. Forever we can rejoice in His presence—no more fear, pain or death.

Thank you Father, for all of the brave ones who stand to protect us while on this earth. Thank you, that Jesus crossed that line and opened Heaven. Amen.
